"Come on!" shouted a man next to me, one of the 2-300 people who gathered in Boston's Government Center to protest the right-wing rally organized by Boston Free Speech and Resist Marxism. "We all know how this ends!" continued the man. "You guys leave, escorted by the police!"
The man wasn't wrong. The rally, scheduled to last three hours, was over in less than one, as police escorted the rally members away. The counter protesters danced and sang, "We are unstoppable! Another world is possible!"
It was one year ago that Boston's first "Free Speech" rally was similarly shut down by a crowd of thousands. Last year's event was planned for one week after the Unite the Right rally in Charlottesville that ended with the murder of Heather Heyer. This event was timed to celebrate the anniversary of last year's debacle, for some reason, and came two weeks after a rally in Providence that was over in minutes.
As leftist counter protesters converged on the rally, Boston police officers on bicycles encircled the approximately two dozens members of the right-wing groups, separating the two sides. Some media was allowed to enter the protective circle to interview the right-wing rally organizers. I didn't do that.
